Sights Keetmanshoop
The city of Windhoek will be exited from the south on the B1. This is the main thoroughfare to South Africa. After about 400 kilometers you arrive in Keetmanshoop.
This usually quiet town is a stopover for many travelers on the way to the Fish River Canyon, although there is more to experience here than many initially think. East of keetmanshoop is the well-known one Kalahari desert and there are several sights near Keetmanshoop that you will definitely want to visit as a tourist. Below we have collected the most important sights of Keetmanshoop for you.
1. Quivertree Forest
For example, just under 14 kilometers outside Keetmanshoop, the Quivertree Forest Rest Camp. This area is known for its quivertrees, also called kokerboom named. Here there are many close together and these are best visited at sunrise or sunset. It is the largest number of quiver trees growing together in all of Namibia.
2. Giant's Playground
Another 5 kilometers further from Quivertree Forest are some beautiful basalt rocks also known as the Giant's Playground. They are reminiscent of the Matobo Hills Zimbabwe. It may be a little less extreme but still interesting to see. The formations were created approximately 180 million years ago. The name Giant's Playground comes from the fact that it looks as if a group of giants played with blocks in this ancient stone landscape.
3. Mesosaurus Fossil Site
Mesosaurus Fossil Site (location here) is also worth visiting. It is a little further away, about another 20 kilometers from Giant's Playground. It is located approximately 42 kilometers from Keetmanshoop. But don't let that stop you. This is the place where you can see fossils of the giant with your own eyes mesosaurus. This dinosaur lived 270 million years ago in the freshwater Lake Gondwanaland.
4. Naute Dam
About 50 kilometers north of Keetmanshoop is the Naute Dam (location here). This impressive dam is surrounded by picturesque scenery and provides the perfect setting for relaxation and birdwatching. The water surface of the dam attracts various bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers. Here you can enjoy a quiet picnic, go fishing or simply admire the serene surroundings.
5. Kalahari Red Dunes
Explore the beautiful red dunes of the Kalahari Desert, which stretch to the east of Keetmanshoop. These dunes are a photogenic landscape that changes with the light of day. It is recommended to take a 4×4 safari through the dunes, where you will not only witness the impressive nature, but also have the chance to spot wild animals that have adapted to this dry environment.
